Coincidence Paintings
These works place artists’ acrylic paint colours together by virtue of the fact that they have identical three-digit codes assigned to them by paint manufacturers. These codes are arbitrary designations by individual competing brands according to their own numbering systems for reference and identification in inventories and stock control systems.
These coincidences define a set of possibilities within the series. Colours are thus placed together neither according to rules of colour theory, nor a reaction against those rules. Instead, they come together due to the (mis)use of their colour chart codes. The result is an aesthetics of chance generated via data and language already existing within a non-aesthetic system.
